Looking to Employ Nurses? We can help.
The Portuguese nurses we source are grouped into three categories. A nurse from Portugal fulfils directives of the EU education system, where nurses’ training is standardized for all EU countries, and will also meet with directives based on combined education and experience.
We will have assessed every nurse when we first meet with them to confirm that they meet with theses directives. Also after several trips to Portugal we have noticed a very high level of English. This is due to the fact that Portuguese normally study English from the age of 6 and all English TV remains in English with subtitles and not dubbed.

NMC / NMBI registered nurses
These are nurses that have completed the NMC / NMBI registration process.
Nurses who have started the process
These are fully qualified nurses currently undergoing the NMBI/NMC registration process and can be employed as nurses but will start off as senior nursing assistants or carers while waiting for their registration to be completed. The registration process if managed properly will take 12 to 16 weeks to complete.
These are experienced nurses fully qualified to EU standards and registered in their home country currently working in their home country or in alternative UK / Irish employment, who however, are willing to undergo the NMBI/NMC registration process subject to suitable job offers from employers.
Nursing Employment FAQs
Can I employ Portuguese nurses?
Yes. Portuguese nurses are not subject to any work restrictions or visa requirements since they come from a EU country, you can employ them legally without any concerns.
Why should I recruit a nurse who only holds a reference number with NMBI or NMC?
We advise employers to recruit nurses who have obtained their reference from the NMBI / NMC and are awaiting full registration as it helps you the employer to keep a RGN before another employer does once their NMBI / NMC process is complete. Also, if they take up a position as a HCA pending their registration, this will give them a chance to familiarise themselves with the Nursing Home or Hospital and really hit the ground running once they have received their pin.
Why should I employ a non-registered nurse?
There are a lot of fully qualified experienced EU nurses seeking work in Ireland and the UK, however, due to the cost and length of time involved in registering with the NMC and NMBI, they decide not to do so until they have an offer and a UK or Irish employer wants to underwrite the costs involved. The costs of registration are roughly equivalent to 4 – 7 weeks’ local wages for them, so many are reluctant to commit to this process without a potential job offer. This option is good for Nursing Homes and Hospitals who are looking at the long term.
